National Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Program
The National Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Program aims to protect females aged 12-26 years years from cervical cancer.
The young adult phase of the Program (12-18 year olds) will be conducted in all NSW high schools in 2007 and 2008 and, on an ongoing basis, to year 7 students from 2009.
HPV vaccine will be offered to all female students in years 7, 8, 9 and 10 in 2008.
This Program is more complex than the routine annual NSW Adolescent Vaccination Program administered currently in all NSW high schools, as HPV vaccine requires three doses to be administered over a 6-month period.
General Practitioners are currently conducting the young women phase of the Program (18 - 26 year olds).
Students who do not commence the school program are required to attend their GP for a course of free HPV vaccine.
Students who commence the school program (have been given dose 1 at school) but are absent on the day of a vaccination clinic for dose 2 or 3 are required to attend their GP to complete the course.
