Scholarships

There are a wide variety of scholarships on offer to encourage aspiring health professionals to undertake a career in rural health as well as those already working in the field and interested in further professional development.

An overview of each program is listed below. If a particular scholarship is of interest to you, visit the external link provided for more information on availability and eligibility criteria.

 

Doctors

  • Rural Australia Medical Undergraduate Scholarships - National Rural Health Alliance
    RAMUS provides financial support of $10,000 a year to assist selected students from country areas to meet accommodation, living and travel costs.
  • John Flynn Scholarship - Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine
    Scholarship holders undertake a placement in the same country community for a minimum of two weeks per year – over 4 years. Food and living expenses are covered up to $500 per week, travel and accommodation is organised and paid for by the college.
  • NSW Rural Doctors Network - Scholarship search function
    The Rural Doctors Network (RDN) is an excellent resource on the scholarships available to students studying medicine. Rural experience scholarships include:
    • Bush Bursaries & Country Women’s Association Scholarships
      These provide medical students with the opportunity to spend two weeks in a rural area. Valued at approximately $3,000.
    • Cotton Industry Medical Scholarship
      Provides financial assistance of $15,000 for three years. In return the student is required to spend a minimum of two weeks of their holidays each year on a rural placement in a NSW cotton growing region.
    • Working HUGS
      The scheme offers medical students the opportunity to experience rural medical life and covers travel costs for students to travel to a rural area during their holidays.
  • Medical Rural Bonded Scholarship – Department of Health and Ageing
    Students agree to practice in rural areas of Australia for six continuous years upon completion of basic medical and postgraduate training as a specialist (including General Practice). The Scholarship amount for 2007 is $22,744, indexed annually.
  • Rural Scholarship Fund - contact Institute of Medical Education and Training
    Specialist trainees may be eligible for a rural scholarship which provides financial assistance of up to $2,000 for completing more than the minimum required terms in one year in a rural hospital.
