Your health services

Health services in New South Wales are provided in a fair manner and without discrimination or favouritism, whatever your race or nationality, language, age, gender, sexual preference, marital status, health status, socio-economic status and whether or not you have any type of disability.

Patient Rights Charter

The Patient Rights Charter outlines what you can expect from the public health services we provide in New South Wales:

We will:

  • respect your dignity and individual needs
  • offer health care based on your health need
  • offer access to a range of public hospital and community based health services
  • allow you to choose to be treated as a public or private patient and explain that choice
  • clearly explain your proposed treatment including significant risks and alternatives in a way you understand
  • obtain your consent before treatment, except in an emergency or where the law says you must have treatment
  • provide free interpreter services
  • assist you to access your medical records if desired
  • respect your privacy and confidentiality
  • assist you if you wish to make a complaint
  • allow you to decide whether or not to take part in medical research and health student education
  • assist you to obtain a second opinion
