NSW Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program

The Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program (BIRP) was established in 1990 as a joint initiative between the NSW Department of Health and the Motor Accidents Authority as a specialist network to provide services to people suffering from a Traumatic Brain Injury and to fill the gaps left by general rehabilitation services in care of people with Traumatic Brain Injury.
The Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program (BIRP) is aimed to lead and coordinate:
- Development and maintenance of a network of services based on a supra area/regional model
- Research into and evaluation of services and outcomes for people with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
- Establishment of clinical services network promoting seamless care and improving access to services for people with TBI
- Development of improved treatment coordination resulting in best practice care for patients receiving brain injury rehabilitation
- Funding and coordination of public awareness and information programs on brain injury

The Brain Injury Rehabilitation Directorate (BIRD) was established as a part of the enhancements to the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program with the primary focus on facilitating implementation of the GMSIG recommendations and act as an advisory body to NSW Health while maintaining clinician and consumer focus in policy development and working on the principle of establishing clinical networks.
