Support services for HSC students

NSW Minister for Health John Hatzistergos today reminded HSC students who feel stressed during their exams to make use of special counselling lines.

Mr Hatzistergos said students feeling overwhelmed as a result of stress can call a number of NSW Health hotlines which are manned 24 hours a day.

"I'm urging students who are feeling the pressure of their exams to seek out support services," he said.

"Each Area Health Service has special access lines which they can use 24 hours a day to assist with support they may need.

"Local GP's, teachers and family members can also offer invaluable support at a time like this."

NSW Health Chief Psychiatrist, Dr John Basson, advised year 12 students on a range of strategies to cope with stress during their exams.

"This is undoubtedly a stressful time of year for many students, so it's important that students practise a healthy lifestyle," he said.

"This will ensure their health is kept at an optimum - both mentally and physically.

"Three key factors contribute towards a healthy lifestyle - sleep well, eat well and enjoy regular exercise.

"If you stick to these principles, students are well on their way to approaching the HSC with a positive mental attitude."

Dr Basson said "with a solid support network, a healthy lifestyle and a balanced work ethic, students should be able to face the HSC with confidence and optimism."

"Remember to take regular breaks from your studies - this will not only benefit you physically but it will also give you an invaluable sense of perspective when you return to your studies," he explained.

"Although the HSC is important, it is equally important that students do not lose focus of the bigger picture. Try not to get too stressed, as that may hinder your ability to perform at your optimum level in the exams."

If students do feel that they need some extra support, Kids Helpline 1800 551 800 is available 24 hours a day. The Reachout website (www.reachout.com.au) is also designed to support young people when they are feeling stressed or in need of support.
