New Chief Executive for Hunter New England Area Health Service

The Director-General of Health, Professor Debora Picone today announced the appointment of the new Chief Executive for the Hunter New England Area Health Service (HNEAHS).

Professor Picone said the new Chief Executive, Dr Nigel Lyons, would take up the position immediately.

"I wish to congratulate Nigel on his appointment and know that his experience in the NSW health system and his ability as a senior manager will be invaluable in his new role," Professor Picone said.

"Dr Lyons has been the Acting Chief Executive of HNE Area Health Service since July this year and was previously the Director, Clinical Operations for the Hunter New England Area Health Service.

"Nigel's breadth of experience in the NSW health system has also seen him act as the Chief Executive of the Greater Southern Area Health Service on two occasions during 2005 and 2006."

The Director-General said Dr Lyons had a long history of service in the public health sector in the Newcastle area where he started his career at Royal Newcastle Hospital and has since been in a number of medical administration roles at the Mater (Newcastle) and the former Hunter Area Health Service.

"Nigel's knowledge and experience will be invaluable in his new role," Professor Picone said.

Dr Lyons remains active on a range of Boards and Councils associated with improving the health outcomes for the people of NSW and specifically for people living within the Hunter New England Area Health Service.
